Samsung announces Electronic Fact headset, Items VR

Samsung has entered the VR action with its Note 4 based Gear VR

Facebook acquired Oculus last year, the company that is credited for bringing Virtual Reality back into the spotlight. Sony is already working on its VR headset called Project Morpheus for the Playstation 4. Google also demonstrated its make shift VR headset at Google I/O in June called the cardboard. With so many manufacturers already on board, can Samsung be far behind?

Enter Samsung Gear VR. The company has launched a Virtual Reality handset that will pair with your Galaxy Note 4 to give you a wireless virtual reality experience.

For the Gear VR, Samsung has partnered with the go-to name in the VR industry, Oculus. Samsung is dealing with the hardware part of the device while Oculus handles the software.

The Gear VR has an accelerometer and a gyrometer to keep track of your head movement. It makes use of the Quad-HD screen on your Galaxy Note 4. The device is extremely minimal in terms of buttons and controls. It has a square touchpad, a back button, a volume rocker and the focus adjustment.

The Note 4 can be paired with the Galaxy VR by removing the front cover of the headset and settling the phone on the micro-USB dock.

What sets apart the Samsung Gear VR is the fact that it will be releasing this year. While other companies have VR products in development, Samsung is already gearing up to ship its consumer version before the year concludes. Samsung is aware that the product is still rough around the edges and is marketing it as the ‘Innovation Edition’ for now. The company is not really targeting the average consumer with the Gear VR, instead hoping for sales from “VR enthusiasts, developers, mobile experts and professionals and early technological adapters.”

Initial hands-on reviews of the Gear VR are almost unanimously positive with reviewers appreciating the immersive experience and the freedom from wires.

There is no detail on the pricing yet but Samsung has assured that the Gear VR will start selling this year.
